Food Technology

Food Technology students have been cooking up some really delicious meals this term. From hot and hearty pumpkin and lentil soup, to souvlaki, to mini pizzas, right through to traditional ANZAC cookies. The students are becoming highly competent in their practical kitchen skills and their skills in presentation have been worthy of a television foodie show. Well done to all Food Tech students!

Year 7 Science

To mix or not to mix and indeed, how does one un-mix?

Year 7 Science students have been learning about the wide range of separating techniques that scientists use when they are trying to separate or purify substances. In particular they have learned about why separations are important in making sure our water supply is safe to drink and in making sewage safe to discharge into the sea. The year 7 girls had great fun learning about centrifuging with a bucket of water and Ms Taylor’s rain coat – just in case the experiment failed!! Centrifuging is an important separating technique used in hospitals for separating the components of blood – a life-saving separation and in the home to separate clothes from water in the washing machine.

Year 10 Science

Year 11 Biology

Year 11 Chemistry

Today in class, we learnt about two different types of hydrocarbons, alkanes and alkenes. Alkanes can only have single bonds between carbon atoms in the molecule, whereas alkenes can have at least one double bond between carbon atoms. In order to illustrate these structural differences, the students made 3D models demonstrating various alkanes and alkenes. In addition, 3D shape helped us, visualise how the lone electrons pairs affect the shape of the molecule according to VSEPR theory.
